Sustainability/ Engagement Director

The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service (NNS) is seeking a full-time Sustainability/ Engagement Director who will be responsible for generating revenue and growing the audience for the news service through community engagement.

Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service is an online source for objective, professional reporting on urban issues in 17 low-income, minority Milwaukee communities. It is a project of the nonprofit United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee, in partnership with the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Generating revenue through foundation funding, advertising, sponsorships and other means
  • Helping to create and execute a targeted NNS community engagement plan
  • Overseeing implementation of community engagement activities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying and applying for philanthropic grants
  • Identifying sponsors for the site (or some aspect of the site), and working out terms of sponsorship agreements
  • Overseeing sales of advertisements, individually and/or through cooperative agreements with other news organizations
  • Identifying and pursuing other revenue-generating opportunities, including events or merchandise sales
  • Maximizing community awareness of NNS’s existence and value
  • Facilitating opportunities to communicate with groups of community residents
  • Increasing participation in community-oriented aspects of the site, such as Posts from the Community, calendar events and directory listings
  • Attending a weekly meeting with NNS staff
  • Communicating on a predetermined schedule with publisher and editor

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Business, Marketing, Communications or a related field
  • 3-5 years of related experience in the following:
    • Knowledge of and interest in serving Milwaukee’s central city neighborhoods
    • Using CRM and analytics, campaign tracking tools and web content
    • Business side of media organizations or web sites
    • Grant-seeking and application writing
    • Business marketing
    • Nonprofit management
    • Social media
    • Community outreach
    • Nonprofit management
    • Public speaking
