Lindsay Heights neighbors come together over healthy living

More than 70 residents and community members recently gathered at Alice’s Garden to celebrate health and wellness in the Lindsay Heights neighborhood.

The Lindsay Heights Neighborhood Health Alliance (LHNHA) hosted its third annual “Healthy Neighborhood Celebration.” The potluck dinner brings neighbors together to get to know each other, and to provide updates on health and wellness programs and activities, according to Jessie Tobin, LHNHA program manager.

LHNHA staff  announced updates on several projects. The alliance will continue a program in which teens sell locally grown produce from Alice’s Garden at three neighborhood corner stores (Magic Foods, 2879 N. 16th St.; Eagle Foods, 1401 W. Center St.; and Family First, 1845 N. 12th St.).

In addition, the group is working to install “Little Libraries” throughout Lindsay Heights, but sites have not been identified yet. Venice Williams, of Alice’s Garden, was the first to have a “Little Library” installed in the neighborhood at Alice’s Garden. LHNHA also promoted weekly yoga classes for children in the garden.

Additionally, on Aug. 17, there will be a health fair at North Division High School followed by the return of the a jazz concert in Johnsons Park, after a five-year hiatus.

Catina Moore attended the event with her family. “It’s a good educational resource for eating healthy food and being proactive,” she said.
