Spaces and Traces 2012 celebrates Concordia neighborhood

Annual neighborhood open house event Spaces and Traces provided this year’s tour goers with an opportunity to explore and learn about 13 different historic locations in the Concordia neighborhood.

The all-day event, presented by Historic Milwaukee Inc., also offered community members the chance to attend lectures and celebrate the neighborhood. Speakers included historian and writer John Gurda and Alderman Bob Bauman.

According to Grace Fuhr, program manager for Historic Milwaukee Inc., 600 people attended this year’s Spaces and Traces event. Now in its 31st year, Spaces and Traces aims to help familiarize community members with Milwaukee’s neighborhoods.

“The goal is to open up doors of architectural spaces and historical traces in Milwaukee’s neighborhoods,” Fuhr said. “It allows people to hear the history not only of the architecture, but also of the people who lived there.”

Of the 13 tour locations featured during this year’s Spaces and Traces event, seven are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Two locations were featured for the first time ever, according to Fuhr: The Faries-Rood-Yale House (3011 W. State St.) and the Second Church of Christ, Scientist (2722 W. Highland Blvd.).

Historic Concordia Neighbors, Inc. partnered with Historic Milwaukee Inc. to put on the event, which was sponsored by Forest County Potawatomi Foundation.
