The Milwaukee Observatory, a public art installation created by students at Bay View High School, came to Mitchell Park this summer for the first time. Housed at the Bay View Historical Society, the Milwaukee Observatory features four 12-foot- high banners representing the people of Milwaukee. Students were on hand in Clarke Square to record stories, scan photographs and historical documents and take photographs of residents. The project grew out of a partnership between the high school and Discovery World, where the students took part in the “Art and Archaeology of Me” program.

Tate’yanna Bennett and Daniel Avila of Bay View High School created their banner after participating in a program at Discovery World.

Student Vanessa Flores poses with her artwork, which features rare Milwaukee artifacts.
